YOUNGSTOWN -- Immaculate Heart of Mary Church will have a Halloween party from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday in the Parish Center. Adult ghouls and goblins (18 and older) are welcome. Cost is $15 per person. A buffet will be served from 8 to 10 p.m. There will be a contest for best dressed, with first-place award of $100; second place, $50; and third place, $25.
Forum on heroin abuse
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A community forum on heroin abuse is planned for 6:30 tonight at the New Castle Public Library. The forum is hosted by Lawrence County District Attorney Matt Mangino and the library. Mangino and Agent Eugene C. Beard Jr., assistant deputy chief to the Pennsylvania Attorney General, will present the program. Topics include heroin, the most commonly used drug in Lawrence County, as well as current drug trends in the county and Western Pennsylvania.
Sentenced in drug case
MERCER, Pa. -- Gerald Cottle Jr., 24, of Prindle Street, Sharon, was sentenced Tuesday in Mercer County Common Pleas Court to one to three years in state prison for possession of crack cocaine with intent to deliver. Judge Christopher St. John gave Cottle credit for 287 days already served. According to court documents, on June 29, 2004, Cottle was apprehended at a Quinby Street, Sharon, address with 12 grams of cocaine and less than 30 grams of marijuana.
Fire quickly put out
FARRELL, Pa. -- A loose wire caused a small fire at Sonoff Cleaners on Romer Boulevard. Farrell Fire Chief Joe Santell said a motion detector alerted police at 1:29 a.m. Tuesday and they saw flames in the back room when they arrived. Firefighters were able to put out the blaze quickly and air out the building, Santell said. The fire chief said they think the wire sparked and started a fire on a small pile of clothes sitting on a clothes dryer.
Fake postal orders
YOUNGSTOWN -- Four postal orders worth $4,000 and cashed at Quick Mart on McGuffey Road turned out to be counterfeit, police said. A store worker discovered the deception when he tried to turn the postal orders in at a bank for payment Monday, police said. The suspect is a regular store customer, reports show.
Gunfire at apartments
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City police say there was gunfire at Crestview Gardens on Pin Oak Drive. According to police, no one was injured but they found nine shell casings from a 9mm handgun in the parking lot at 7:47 p.m. Tuesday. They also found three shell casings in the hallway of 1103 Pin Oak Drive from another gun. Police said none of the tenants wanted to get involved, but they do believe some of the shooters left the apartment complex in an older white station wagon.
Car reported stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- A cautionary tale for cold weather: A Struthers woman visiting her boyfriend on Tampa Avenue had him start her car in the driveway to warm it up Tuesday. When she left his house about five minutes later she discovered someone had driven off in her 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier.
Burglary at church
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man and woman who sought financial assistance at Holy Name Parish on North Lakeview Avenue on Monday are suspected of returning to the church office the next day and kicking in the front door to get to cash boxes that contained about $600, reports show. Police have the suspects' names because parish visitors seeking help are routinely asked their names.
