Police seek robber
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Neshannock Township police are looking for a middle-aged man who robbed the Citizens Bank branch office inside the Giant Eagle store at 3230 Wilmington Road. Police said the man entered the bank around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and demanded money. A teller handed the man an undisclosed amount of money and he ran out of the bank. Police said he went north behind the store and got into a small gold vehicle. The robber was described as in his 50s with gray hair and mustache and weighing 170 to 185 pounds. He is about 5 feet 11 inches tall and wore blue jeans and a long-sleeved shirt.
Trial set for coach
BOARDMAN -- A trial has been set for 11:30 a.m. Dec. 6 in Mahoning County Court here for the Canfield High School baseball coach charged with gambling. Anthony Ross, 39, of Edwards Street, Canfield, is charged with 11 misdemeanor counts of gambling. Ross, also a Canfield teacher since 1989, is accused of conducting several Texas Hold 'Em tournaments to raise money for the baseball team this year and in 2004 without the documentation from the Internal Revenue Service required to be classified as a charitable organization permitted to conduct fund-raisers.
Fraternity must pay
YOUNGSTOWN -- An unnamed Youngstown State University fraternity on Indiana Avenue has agreed to replace three Greek letters (ZTA) that were removed from a sorority house on Illinois Avenue, police said. The letters, worth $600, were damaged when removed over the weekend, reports show. The sorority house manager spoke to the fraternity president, who acknowledged the letters were in a member's room. In lieu of a criminal charge, the fraternity will pay to have new letters made and affixed to the sorority house, police said.
2 sought in robbery
LIBERTY -- Township police are searching for two men who robbed a worker at Wendy's fast-food restaurant on Belmont Avenue Tuesday morning. The employee drove to a bank in the 3000 block of Belmont at 4 a.m. to make a deposit when a man came from behind a nearby trash bin with a gun, demanding the money. Reports say the man pointed the gun at the back of the employee's head and the employee dropped the money. A nearby witness started blowing a car horn and flashing the headlights to attract attention to the situation. A second man came from behind the trash bin and both men ran with the money. Witnesses said a gunshot was heard as they ran away.
Firefighter promotion
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fire Chief John J. O'Neill Jr. was to swear in firefighter John Casey as a lieutenant today at No. 1 station downtown. Casey, 29, has been with the department since May 1998. He will be assigned to No. 6 station on Shehy Street.
