McDONALD -- School board and village council candidates will speak and a presentation is scheduled on a proposed 4.9-mill continuing replacement levy at a public forum set for 7 p.m. Nov. 2 at the McDonald High School auditorium.
The levy is for building a sports complex and upgrading athletic facilities.
Superintendent Michael Wasser told the school board Monday the presentation on the planned high school sports complex and varied athletic facility improvements will take place first, followed by the candidates' presentations.
High school teacher Jerry Gamertsfelder will serve as moderator for the candidates' session.
Two school board seats are open for four-year terms. Seeking office are Catherine M. Harvey, Jeff Hughes, Robert L. Jones (incumbent) and Richard Martin. Not seeking re-election is Dr. William Kunkle.
The five running for six council seats, which are four-year terms, are Rich Harvey, Pete Sudol, Mike O'Brien (incumbent), Jim Jones (incumbent) and Louis Ball. Not seeking re-election are Steve Treharn and Rose Yakubov.
Each candidate will give a three- to five-minute presentation.
Wasser told the board he will be filming a 30-second commercial with Armstrong Cable this week to run Nov. 5, 6 and 7 on ESPN, Lifetime and CNN News. He said payment for the commercial time has been donated by a resident.
Changes in grading system
He also told the board the informational forum to change report cards has decided to change to a "no grade" format for kindergarten and first grade. Pupils will receive either satisfactory or not satisfactory evaluations.
In second grade, a letter grade from A to F will be given for math, but all other subjects will receive an evaluation of either satisfactory or not satisfactory.
In other matters, Anthony Russo, Roosevelt Elementary School principal, said that kindergarten through fourth-grade pupils will have their Halloween parade starting at 1 p.m. Friday, weather permitting.
The costumed pupils will pass by the village senior citizens residence.
Fifth- and sixth-graders will try a new celebration this year with a Harvest Fest, also starting a 1 p.m., to include games, musical activities, line dancing and food.
