Man arrested after foot chase

YOUNGSTOWN -- Police officers looking for a man accused of cocaine trafficking wound up arresting a different person, but on similar charges.
Police were in the 100 block of Halleck Street just after noon Tuesday when they spotted a man they thought might be their suspect getting into a car. They stopped the car as it began to drive away, and the man jumped out and tried to run.
Officers chased him across Kensington Avenue and said he dropped a large, clear plastic bag containing suspected drugs in a vacant lot before they caught him in a back yard in the 100 block of Benita Avenue.
Police said the bag contained a large amount of suspected crack cocaine as well as some suspected heroin and marijuana.
The man wasn't the person they were looking for.
He was identified as Jason L. Jones, 22, of Halleck Street and was charged with trafficking in heroin and possession of cocaine and marijuana. Police said he was also wanted on a probation violation warrant on an earlier crack cocaine charge.
Police said Jones was taken to the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department, but the sheriff's department had no record of his being lodged in the county jail Tuesday evening.
