YOUNGSTOWN -- An 81-year-old East Scott Street man who speaks only Spanish was robbed Sunday afternoon after cashing a check at a convenience store on Elm Street, police said. An officer who speaks Spanish learned that the robbery took place in the victim's front yard. The victim said he walked home from the store and was approached from behind by a man he'd seen walking up and down the street. The elderly man was pushed in the head, which caused him to fall face first to the ground. The suspect then took the wallet and ran. The victim, who has no phone, walked back to the store to call police.
Payment with fake bill
YOUNGSTOWN -- An 18-year-old woman who police said used a fake $20 to pay for food at Burger King on Midlothian Boulevard was pulled over when she left the fast-food restaurant around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Nicole R. Jones, 18, of Clearmont Avenue, was due in municipal court today to be arraigned on a charge of driving without a license. Jones was also arrested on a forgery charge, but that charge was not filed Monday, the clerk of court's office said. Police collected five counterfeit $20s from Burger King, four of which they said were used by four men who had been at the drive-through before Jones in the same car she drove to the restaurant.
Pizza man robbed
SHARON, Pa. -- A late-night pizza delivery left the driver without his food, wallet and watch. Police said two men, one with a gun, approached a Vocelli Pizza deliveryman at 11:39 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of Mesabi Street and demanded the pizzas, his wallet and watch. Police did not say how much money was taken.
Arson fire burns house
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire was deliberately set at 239 Crandall Ave. on the North Side around 6 a.m. Sunday and resulted in a total loss of the vacant two-story house, said fire Lt. Kevin Johnson. Fire spread from the first floor to the upstairs and caused $15,000 worth of damage, he said. At 10 p.m. Sunday, fire started in the basement of an occupied house at 157 W. Philadelphia Ave. on the South Side, Johnson said. No injuries were reported. Damage was listed at $10,000 to the house and $8,000 to the contents. The cause of the fire, which was confined to the basement, remains under investigation.
