Mudbugs' overtime goal hands SteelHounds their first defeat

BOSSIER CITY, La. -- Brett Smith finished a hat trick and won the game with one shot as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs defeated the Youngstown SteelHounds 4-3 in overtime Saturday night.
The SteelHounds (1-0-1), who gained one point in the Central Hockey League standings with the OT loss, got a pair of goals from Lorne Misita and one goal and one assist by Rob Ouimette.
Misita scored both of his goals in the first period, the first coming on a power play at the 2:21 mark. Kris Mallette and Matt Nicholson had assists.
Misita's second goal was a terrific individual effort as he beat two defensemen and blasted a shot past Mudbugs goalie Paul Schoenfelder.
Power-play goals
Bossier-Shreveport used special teams to get on the board, scoring a pair of power play goals less than a minute apart.
Smith got the first one, jamming home the puck around traffic in front of Youngstown goalie David St. Germain.
The second was a pretty set-up that resulted in Dan Wildfong's first goal of the season.
Youngstown was outshot 17-6 in the first period as St. Germain made 15 saves.
The Mudbugs controlled much of the second period, outshooting the SteelHounds 10-3 and scoring the only goal when Smith beat St. Germain on a short-handed shot on an assist by Chad Spurr.
The SteelHounds tied the score at 11:12 of the third period when Ouimette scored his first pro goal short-handed and unassisted.
In overtime, Smith scored the game-winner on a delayed penalty call at the 1:40 mark.
