Meet the candidates
WARREN -- Trumbull County League of Women Voters and Emerson Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association are sponsoring a meet-the-candidates forum for those running for Warren Board of Education, 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the school, 1619 Drexel Ave. Schools Superintendent Kathryn Hellweg will be available, and Trumbull County Board of Elections staff will offer hands-on demonstrations of the new electronic voting machines.
School cafeteria meeting
NILES -- The board of education will hold an informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3 in the high school cafeteria to explain the Biometric Card Swipe Identification System that will be implemented at the cafeteria. The system will be used by all students to pay for lunches.
Buyer workshop
YOUNGSTOWN -- Family Financial Education Services, a program of Family Service Agency, is sponsoring a first-time buyer workshop from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 2. This free workshop is designed to cover basic home-buying information, such as determining affordability, budgeting, credit problems and the loan application process. It will be held at the Family Service Agency, 535 Marmion Ave. All participants will receive a certificate of attendance that will satisfy the education requirements for some mortgage programs. Vietnam Veterans ritual
YOUNGSTOWN -- Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 135 will lead its 14th annual Laying of the Roses ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 6 at the Vietnam War Memorial on the public square. One rose will be placed at the monument in memory of each Mahoning County resident killed or missing in action during the Vietnam War. The event is also sponsored by American Legion Post 472.
Candidates night planned
VIENNA -- A candidates night will be at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at Mathews High School cafeteria, sponsored by Mathews Community PTO and Kiwanis of Vienna. Invited to speak are candidates for the Mathews school board, Fowler and Vienna trustees and representatives from Fairhaven, Trumbull County Children Services and the Warren-Trumbull Public Library.
Walk warm in the school
COLUMBIANA -- "Walk Warm Program" for the Columbiana Exempted Village School District community resumes Oct. 31. The program invites adults age 30 and over to walk in Columbiana High School hallways for exercise during inclement weather. A measured course is posted for walkers who choose to keep a log of distance. The building is open for the program from 3 to 5 p.m. weekdays. It is closed on school holidays and when school is canceled.
Aid for Katrina victims
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Cafaro Foundation said it matched eligible funds donated for Hurricane Katrina relief in September on Cafaro properties for a total donation of $225,000 to the Salvation Army. The national effort stretched from Virginia to Washington state, and donations were accepted through rare nonholiday Salvation Army kettle ringers. Also, employees at Cafaro properties donated nonperishable food items, donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.
