Smith earns TKO
WEIRTON, W. Va. -- Boardman boxer Kiez Smith continued the winning ways of his amateur career as he stopped Silky Nelson at 21 seconds of round two in a scheduled 150 pound four-rounder Thursday night.
The bout, part of a nine fight card promoted by Tri-State Boxing Club Promotions at the Serbian American Cultural Center, ensured that fighters from the Valley would split evenly in six of the fights.
Smith (4-1), trained by John Hobart at the Buckeye Elks was superb at working his left jab in the early going of round one. Solid rights to the body and left hooks to the head followed the jab as Nelson (7-7) from Pittsburgh's Brock AC went down in the first round, taking an eight count. The punishment doled out by Smith in the early seconds of round two had the referee stop the contest.
Two other Valley winners on the card were the Vann brothers from the Warren Boxing Club, Jamel and Kaleem. Jamel Vann, in a Junior Olympic 105-pound three-rounder, decisioned Alex Lucas from Parkersburg, W.Va., and Kaleem Vann, in a 95-pound Junior Olympic three-rounder had too many skills for Jake Maier from Pittsburgh.
Stefan Gantt, also from the Warren Boxing Club, lost a hard fought four-round 132-pound decision to Pittsburgh's Chuck Lehner.
Tommy Joseph and Ricky Wanamaker from the Downtown Boxing Club, lost decisions to veteran amateurs. Joseph, with only seven amateur fights, lost a 147-pound four-rounder to Mark Daley from Pittsburgh. Joseph scored well with left hooks in the early going against the taller Daley, whose had 60 amateur fights.
Wanamaker, in his first fight, also looked good early against Zach Smith from Chester, W.Va., who was a veteran of more than 20 bouts, but Smith finished well to get the three-round decision in a battle of 135-pounders.
