YOUNGSTOWN -- Reservations are being taken for "Finding Foundation Support for your Education," a Grant Center program scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 29 at the Austintown Library Meeting Room, 600 S. Raccoon Road.
This program is geared to students and parents seeking financial support to pursue undergraduate education. It offers a step-by-step approach to finding financial aid and includes facts about foundations and other sources of student aid. Suggestions on identifying funders and the financial aid application process will be included.
Reservations can be placed by calling the Main Library, (330) 744-8636, and pressing "2" at the phone prompt for "Reference Information."
Flu shot clinic set
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown City Health District, Mahoning County District Board of Health and Struthers City Health Department will host a combined flu and pneumonia shot clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, at the Mill Creek Community Center, 496 Glenwood Ave.
Cost of the flu vaccine is $10; the pneumonia vaccine is $30. Medicare Part B recipients may not have to pay for the shots, but they must bring their Medicare card to determine eligibility.
There is no cost to Medicaid recipients, but they must bring their health card.
Police alert on scam
COLUMBIANA -- The Columbiana Police Department is alerting the public that an unidentified man has been falsely telling local businesses that his vehicle has broken down and he needs money to have it towed. The man states that he is a regular customer of the business. The man has been driving an older blue Chevrolet S-10 pick-up truck, and may be driving other vehicles. The department asked people to report any additional requests to police.
Pa. Route 258 will close
MERCER, Pa. -- Pa. state Route 258, Mercer-Butler Road, will be closed here and in Springfield and Findley townships from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday for the replacement of a culvert, weather permitting.
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials said the following red arrow detour will be posted:
Southbound traffic will take Pa. Route 19 to Pa. Route 208 east to Pa. Route 58 then north to Route 258.
Northbound traffic for Route 258 will go east on Route 208 to Route 58 north to Route 258.
WRTA levies supported
YOUNGSTOWN -- City council unanimously passed resolutions supporting two WRTA 2-mill renewal tax levies on the Nov. 8 ballot. Only Youngstown city residents vote on WRTA tax issues. One levy is for 10 years and raises $1,047,441 a year; the other is for four years and raises $1,097,835 annually. Both are for operating and capital budget expenses. WRTA's annual budget is about $7.6 million.
Title I program planned
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown City School District is inviting parents of all its students to attend a federal Title I program from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Choffin Career & amp; Technical Center, 200 E Wood St. Title I is federal money distributed to school districts to benefit low-income students. There are regulations for its use, and parents should be informed on what programs the money can be spent.
McTeacher's Night
YOUNGSTOWN -- Teachers from Struthers High School and Woodside Elementary School will be behind the counters of their local McDonald's restaurants next week to raise money for school programs. It's called "McTeacher's Night" and teachers will don aprons and serve food from 4 to 7 p.m. with 20 percent of the sales generated being donated to their schools. Struthers teachers will be at the McDonald's at 609 E. Midlothian Blvd. on Monday; Woodside teachers will be at the McDonald's at 5526 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, on Wednesday.
Parent night reset
YOUNGSTOWN -- The sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade parent night at Ursuline High School has been rescheduled to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Information on tuition, financial aid and school programs will be presented. Ursuline will administer its placement test for all incoming freshmen from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 3 in the high school cafeteria, 750 Wick Ave. There is no charge for the test. Pupils should take two No. 2 pencils. Parents must call the school at (330) 744-4563 to reserve a place for their child.
