CLEVELAND Man who crashed was killed by cop, coroner says

CLEVELAND (AP) -- A man who crashed a stolen car into a Chinese restaurant was shot and killed by a police officer and didn't die in the crash, the county coroner said.
David Crenshaw, 33, of Cleveland, was wanted on an outstanding warrant for a drug trafficking charge and had served time in prison for drug and robbery convictions, according to court records and the police.
Patrolman Al Gulley, 42, told police he saw Crenshaw attempting to steal a car Thursday morning. Investigators think Gulley reached into the stolen vehicle to grab Crenshaw and was dragged.
Gulley shot him twice, but Crenshaw drove on, hitting another car before crashing into Jackie Chen's restaurant on the city's East Side. He died from the gunshot wounds, said Cuyahoga County Coroner Elizabeth Balraj.
Released from hospital
Gulley, 42, was released from a hospital Friday after receiving treatment for nonlife threatening injuries. He will lead detectives on a walk-through of the shooting next week, police spokesman Lt. Thomas Stacho said.
"Gulley believed he observed a male stealing a car," Stacho said. "No one can question his judgment right now."
Gulley had taken Cleveland City Council President Frank Jackson, a mayoral candidate, to his campaign office about 45 minutes before he confronted Crenshaw.
