Fitch holds off Salem for win



Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary toppled Boardman and Canfield beat Harding.
AUSTINTOWN -- Krysta Mayes scored eight of her game-high 17 points in the third quarter as the Fitch girls basketball team beat Salem 51-48 Tuesday.
Despite being shut out in the first quarter, the Quakers (0-1) rallied to lead 22-21 at the break.
The Falcons (2-0), behind Mayes, seized a 36-32 lead entering the final eight minutes.
Alexis Hall scored 14 points for Fitch. Mayes pulled in nine rebounds.
Leah Perry hit for 16 points and Zahra Scullion added 12 points and eight rebounds for Salem.
Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 64,Boardman 44
AKRON -- Kara Murphy scored 22 points and Chelsea Ciptak 10 to lead the Irish (2-1).
April Melquist scored 16 points for the Spartans (1-1). Courtney Schiffauer chipped in 12.
Canfield 86, Warren Harding 24
WARREN -- Kate Popovec and Bryanne Halfhill -- both first-team all-Metro Athletic Conference selections last year -- each scored 18 points to lead the Cardinals in a non-league game.
Taylor Amendolara added 10 points for the Cardinals.
Ka'Mela Bender and Jasmine Stringer each scored six for Harding.
LaBrae 39, Warren Christian 8
LEAVITTSBURG -- Lindsey Higgins had nine points and six rebounds and Morgan Briscoe added eight points and four rebounds for the Vikings (1-0), who shot 18 of 86 from the field.
Emily Potter added 12 rebounds.
The Rams shot 3 of 40 from the field and were out-rebounded 55-27.
Mathews 42,Youngstown Christian 35
VIENNA -- Sophie Paddock scored 16 points and Lauren Roscoe added 13 for Mathews, which outscored Youngstown Christian 10-4 in the fourth quarter to pull away in the season opener for both teams.
Rachel Coristin scored 11 points for Youngstown Christian and Victoria Bankhead added five points and nine rebounds.
Pymatuning Valley 46.Grand Valley 36
ORWELL -- Robin Holt scored 14 and Susannah Haines 13 to lead Pymatuning Valley (1-0).
Annslee DeLuca pulled down 11 rebounds and scored 14 points for Grand Valley (0-1).
