YOUNGSTOWN -- The owner of Southside License Bureau on Market Street fired at three masked robbers at the business, police said. No injuries were reported. Two of the men jumped the counter Monday evening and demanded money at gunpoint. One robber went to the rear of the building and spotted the owner, who then fired his .357-caliber Magnum several times, and the suspects fled, reports show. As they fled, the robbers fired at the front windows and rear door. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken.
Fire began in wiring
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire at 408 W. Earle Ave. apparently started in electrical wiring around 5:30 p.m. Monday and burned through the first floor into the basement ceiling, the fire department said. No injuries were reported. The occupant told firefighters that she put a cake in the oven and then went shopping for about 30 minutes. After shopping, she noticed smoke coming from the house as she stood outside talking to neighbors, reports show. Damage to the house and contents was estimated at $15,000.
Fire ruled accidental
HOWLAND -- The cause of a Monday afternoon fire at a house at 143 Valley Circle is listed as accidental, the fire department said without elaborating. Damage was estimated at $11,000 to the house and $9,000 to its contents. An occupant was treated for a minor injury at the scene.
Increased enforcement
NILES -- The city police department said it will increase the number of officers engaged in enforcement of drunken- and impaired-driving laws at random times in December on designated city streets.
Hat and glove giveaway
GIRARD -- Our Way Home Christian Fellowship, 429 Ohio Ave., will give away hats and gloves for children from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

COLUMBIANA -- The Way Station is seeking families to adopt needy families for Christmas.

3rd annual toy drive
LISBON -- The Columbiana County Career and Technical Center is having its third annual toy drive.
People may bring toys to the career center between today and Dec. 9. All toys must be new and in their boxes.
The drive is sponsored by the center's welding and fabrication program. Last year, the welding program received 106 new toys that were donated to the Salvation Army.
Christmas tree sales
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Springfield Township Fire Station No. 21 on Struthers Road will host its annual Christmas tree sales beginning Saturday. Five varieties of fresh-cut trees will be sold from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Proceeds will help the station to buy equipment.
Flu shots offered
STRUTHERS -- Flu shots are offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at St. Nicholas Church, 764 Fifth St., by the Struthers City Board of Health and the Mahoning County District Board of Health. The cost is $15 per shot. People on Medicare or Medicaid must bring their cards. No appointment is necessary.
Christmas tree lighting
BAZETTA -- The Bazetta Township Park Board, in conjunction with the Bazetta Township Police Department, will hold a Christmas tree lighting at 6 p.m. Sunday at Bazetta Township Park.
The event will feature Christmas tree decorations made by the students of Bazetta Elementary School, music by the Stan Family and an appearance by Santa Claus. Refreshments will be served at the Bazetta Town Hall, 3372 state Route 5, immediately following the festivities. This event is free and open to the public.
Christmas show
NILES -- "The Making of the Modern Christmas" will be presented by Joseph Kelly of John Carroll University from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday in the McKinley Birthplace Home and Research Center, 40 S. Main St.
