Two Southeast High School basketball coaches are killed in a head-on crash on Ohio Route 224 while en route from Pennsylvania to Ravenna for a game. Killed were Charles Wilson, 24, the head coach, and William Whitten, 25, his assistant, both of Edinburg. The coaches normally road with the team on the bus, but had decided to go to this game by car.

Bishop Jules B. Jeannard of Lafayette, La., excommunicates three Roman Catholic women who beat a catechism teacher for instructing Negro and white children in the same classroom. It was the first time in 38 years as a bishop that Jeannard excommunicated anyone.
Five girls strangle a 59-year-old matron in a well-rehearsed escape from the Summit County Detention Home. One girl remains at large. Two turned themselves in; two were caught.

For every 66 children in Youngstown schools, there is one child who comes to school daily without breakfast because his parents are unable to provide, says D.E. Lehman, chief attendance officer. Lehman, who conducted a charity survey, describes conditions in the schools as "serious, but not so desperate as many reports indicate."
