GIRLS BASKETBALL Mayes hits 17 points to lead Fitch victory

AUSTINTOWN -- Krista Mayes had 17 points and key offensive rebounds down the stretch Saturday as the Austintown Fitch girls basketball team defeated Poland, 37-35.
Mayes, a 6-1 senior center, had nine of her points in the second half.
With a minute remaining, sophomore Rachel Rouan made her only field goal to put Fitch ahead by one and junior Lindsay Packer made one of two free throws to finalize the score.
Jessica Toth's 16 points paced Poland.
Rayen 61, East Liverpool 52
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Brittney Taylor scored 24 points and Tieara Jones added 21 to trigger the Tigers' attack in the season opener.
The schools were tied 28-28 at halftime. The Tigers the moved ahead 45-41 going in the final quarter, then sealed the victory with a 16-11 surge in the final period.
Jones pulled down 13 of the Tigers 41 rebounds and Taylor had seven steals.
Kat Ammon led the Potters with 13 points. Ceirra Moxley added 12 points and she grabbed 10 of East Liverpools rebounds.
Boardman 98, Woodrow Wilson 10
BOARDMAN -- Courtney Schiffauer scored 27 points and grabbed five rebounds while April Melquist added 21 points to power Boardman in the season opener for both teams.
Stacy Wahlman added 12 points, Mallis 11 with eight assists, Makala Gasperek eight steals and six points and Kelly Haren five rebounds to reinforce the Spartans, who led 32-0 after the first period.
South Range 67, Campbell 27
NORTH LIMA -- Cindy Schuler scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds while Kelcie Witmer contributed nine steals, eight points and five assists to power South Range in the season opener for both squads.
Heather Stacy added 11 points and five assists and Lynn O'Connell nine points to support the Raiders.
Danielle Ball had seven points and Dana Moore six or Campbell.
