Cardinals scouting report: Coach P.J. Fecko is 42-26 in five seasons, including 12-2 last year. Mooney is in the playoffs for the 19th year with a 33-13 playoff record and five state titles, four under Don Bucci. Entering this season, the Cardinals ranked No. 9 in the state in total points accorded for each playoff appearance (1), playoff win (2) and state championship (3). Mooney's losses this year were to a Division II team (Watterson, 38-20) and a Div. III squad (Benedictine, 28-13). Mooney is coming off a 30-12 win over Canton Central Catholic last Saturday. The Cardinals compiled 461 total yards in the win, 405 by rushing, while limiting Canton to 256 total yards, 58 by rushing. The Cardinals are only two wins away from their second straight state championship. Senior RB Nate Burney scored three TDs against Central Catholic on runs of 44 (fumble return) and 5 yards and 1 yard. Senior QB Derrell Johnson tallied on an 83-yard run and senior PK Will Kandray kicked a 44-yard FG and three extra points. Johnson's TD and Burney's fumble return helped the Cardinals take a 13-0 lead. And they built the margin to 30-0 before Canton rallied for two TDs in the fourth quarter after Mooney had begun sending in substitutes. The Cardinals have scored 366 points this season for 28.2 points per game, while allowing 185 for 14.2. Burney has been Mooney's workhorse on offense, defense and special teams. He leads the offense with 2,132 yards rushing in 298 attempts for a 7.2-yard average, 21 TDs, 164.0 yards per game and 132 points. Burney also is averaging 16.8 yards for 12 kickoff returns and 19.1 yards for nine punt returns while senior Kenny Coleman is at 13.5 for eight punt returns. Johnson, who missed several games because of a leg injury, has made a strong return and is a double threat as a rusher and passer. Johnson has rushed for 1,092 yards in 83 attempts for a 13.2-yard average, 121.3 yards per game, 10 TDs and 60 points. He also has completed 29-of-55 passes for 493 yards and 54.8 yards per game and eight TDs with five interceptions. Mooney's top receiver is senior Pat Kohowski with 13 catches for 1246 yards for an 18.9-yard average and three TDs. Senior WR Desmond Marrow has seven catches for 147 yards and two TDs. Bellaire scouting report: Bellaire coach John Magistro is in his 22nd year at the helm with a 169-74 record. The Big Reds are in the playoffs for the eighth time, all under Magistro. Bellaire's first playoff berth was in 1993. The Big Reds' won their fifth regional championship this year. Bellaire has played Mooney twice, in 1995 in a regional final and in 1996 in a state semifinal, and won both games. The Big Reds got to the state finals in 1995 and 1996 and lost to Versailles and Germantown, respectively. "They were two unbelievable games," recalled Magistro of the two playoff wins over Mooney. "We won them both. One was in overtime in 1995, and in the 1996 game we were down and came back. They were two good games. Both went down to the wire. They were very physical football teams." Magistro said he has studied three Mooney games. "We have three films . We exchanged three films with Mooney. They have so many strengths. They are not one-dimensional. Their quarterback can run and pass. They have great speed at receivers who can gain yards after catching passes. They have a good offensive line. I find very few weaknesses against them, and defensively they get after you and they have a good field goal kicker. They don't have too many weaknesses." Bellaire beat Ironton last Saturday in three overtimes, 34-28. "In the third overtime we got the ball and scored on an 8-yard run on a draw play by the quarterback and then we missed the extra point and they got the ball and we stopped the in four downs," explained Magistro. Bellaire is a strong passing team behind senior QB Nate Davis, who has completed 178 of 311 passes for 2,659 yards and 35 TDs with eight interceptions. His favorite target is junior WR Trey Masciarelli who has 39 catches for 726 yards and 16 TDs. Masciarelli also leads in points scored with 102 on 17 total TDs. But Bellaire also has an array of good receivers in senior WR Todd Coyne with 25 catches for 292 yds and four TDs, senior TE Eric Padgett (24, 443, 3), junior RB Artis Johnson (24, 255, 1) and senior WR Andrew Bobka (16, 164, 3). Bobka, also a DB, suffered a concussion last week and may not play Saturday. "Most people talk about us as a passing team although there are times when we have a balanced attack. It depends on the defense. But we are more of a passing team," said Magistro. The Big Reds' top rusher is junior RB Jayson Keyser with 494 yards in 91 carries and 10 TDs, and he also has caught 12 passes for 180 yards and two TDs. Keyser has 88 points on 14 total TDs and two conversion runs. Davis also has rushed for 373 yards in 71 carries and 11 TDs. "The biggest thing we have is good team speed," said Magistro. "Offensively we have a quarterback [Davis] that has a great arm and is being recruited by several Div. I schools. Defensively, we are not very big but we swarm to the ball. I think those would be our strengths." On defense, Bobka has six interceptions for 62 yards and two TDs while senior DB Jared Booth has five interceptions for 11 yards.
