NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Despite a team-high 33 points by senior guard Mark DeMonaco (New Castle), the Westminster College men's basketball team dropped a 121-109 non-conference loss at Pitt-Bradford on Tuesday.
Ryan Race of Pitt-Bradford led all scorers with a game-high 40 points on 18-of-29 shooting from the field. DeMonaco also posted a team-high six steals for the Titans (1-2), while sophomore guard Craig Hannon (Union) had 17 points and sophomore guard Chauncey Whitlow (Wilson) added 14.
The Titans trailed the Panthers by six points (60-54) at the half. Bradford connected on 70 percent of its field goal attempts in the game, compared to 42 percent for Westminster.
Penn State Altoona 69,Grove City 64
ALTOONA, Pa. -- Sophomore guard Shawn Carr (Mohawk) scored 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting for Grove City (0-3).
Tyler Franklin led Penn State Altoona with 19 points.
Grove City shot 56 percent (14 of 25) from the floor in the second half but could not overcome Altoona's 28-21 edge on the glass. Penn State Altoona (1-2) took the lead for good at 49-47 with 10:34 left.
Marietta 51, Bethany 41
BETHANY, W.Va. -- Marietta hit 15 three-pointers and used a 51-41 advantage on the glass, including 27 offensive boards, to come back from an early double-digit deficit in Bethany's home opener.
The 221 combined points were the most scored by two teams in a Bethany game since the Bison dropped a 128-105 contest to the University of Redlands (Calif.) in 1990. It's also the most points ever scored by the Bison in a loss.
Women
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Mount Union jumped out to a 12-0 lead and led wire-to-wire. Five Mount Union players scored in double figures, led by Kyla Hogan's 16 points. Brooke Ghilani scored 15 off the bench while Alicia Williams added a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double. Lauren Friedrich fired in 11 while Ashley Ross contributed 10 points.
Sophomore Rachel McCoy (Beaver Local) led Grove City with 14 points.
Denison 79, Thiel 50
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Amber Bodrick, a Cardinal Mooney High graduate, scored 12 points and 10 rebounds in a losing cause for Thiel (0-3).
Denison had three players in in double figures, led by Amber Hill's 15 points. Kristen Sheffeld had a game-high 14 rebounds.
Slippery Rock 73,Fairmont State 58
FAIRMONT, W. Va. -- Amber McFeely (Grove City) became Slippery Rock University's career assists leader in the win.
McFeely now has 423 assists in her four-year career. The old mark of 422 was held by Kathy Lisman Wood set from 1978-82.
Kenyon 82, Bethany 58
GAMBIER, Ohio -- Bethany College senior Jenny Place (Badger) had 18 points, six assists and six rebounds in a losing effort. She also had six assists -- one off her career high. Kenyon was led by Katy Zeanah with 18 points.
