Police chase case is bound over

Wednesday, November 23, 2005

AUSTINTOWN -- A man who is charged with a third-degree felony of fleeing and eluding in an early-morning chase that led police past children at their bus stops had his case bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury this week.
John A. Smith, 25, of Ayrshire Drive, had misdemeanor charges related to his case dismissed Monday. He had pleaded innocent to those charges, which were resisting arrest, a sixth offense of driving without insurance, and failure to display two license plates.
Police began chasing Smith on Ayrshire at 7:15 a.m. Oct. 19. An officer recognized his car as one that had fled from an attempted traffic stop Oct. 15, according to a police report. The chase went on through several streets to Meridian Road, where there were several school buses and pupils in the area, the report said.
He was chased onto a dead-end street and fled into woods, the report said. Youngstown police officers found him coming out of the woods onto Schenley Avenue.
