No. 8 Gonzaga 109, No. 12 Michigan State 106 (3OT)
LAHAINA, Hawaii -- The rest of college basketball has all season to try and match this one. Adam Morrison set a tournament record with 43 points and Gonzaga beat Michigan State in triple overtime in the semifinals of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Maurice Ager of Michigan State tied it at 80 at the final buzzer of regulation with his fifth 3-pointer over the final 7:10. The first overtime ended with Gonzaga having a chance to win, but the Bulldogs missed three shots in the final 9 seconds. The second overtime ended with the officials putting 0.9 seconds back on the clock after a Michigan State turnover just before the buzzer but Gonzaga couldn't take advantage.
Then, finally, Morrison made two free throws with 19 seconds left in the third overtime to give Gonzaga (3-0) the lead for good at 107-106. Michigan State freshman Goran Suton missed a layup with 4.6 seconds left. Derek Raivio made two free throws without time going off the clock for a three-point lead.
No. 7 Kentucky 80, West Virginia 66
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Patrick Sparks scored 25 points and led an early 20-0 run that carried Kentucky past West Virginia in the consolation game of the Guardians Classic. Kentucky (3-1) turned an early 9-2 deficit into a 22-9 lead in the first half with Sparks hitting three 3-pointers, and West Virginia (2-2) spent the rest of the game trying to catch up. Rajon Rondo had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for Kentucky and Sparks was 7-for-11 from behind the arc, matching his career-high. He also had six assists. Kevin Pittsnogle tied his career-high with 27 points and also had 10 rebounds. The only other Mountaineer in double figures was Mike Gansey with 12 points.
No. 10 Boston College 92, Buffalo 63
BOSTON -- Jared Dudley scored 20 points to help Boston College survive an off-night by preseason All-America Craig Smith and beat Buffalo. Smith had 12 points and four rebounds, missing seven minutes in the first half due to foul trouble and six minutes in the second when he got a cut over his left eye. The senior forward, who averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds in BC's first two games, also sat out the last four minutes of the blowout. Boston College improved to 3-0 in the non-conference part of its inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference season. Yassin Idbihi scored 22 with 10 rebounds and Parnell Smith had 18 and eight for Buffalo (2-1).
No. 15 Illinois 93, Texas Southern 59
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Dee Brown scored 14 points and James Augustine added 13 to lead Illinois to a rout of Texas Southern. The Illini (3-0) were in complete control after the first two minutes of the game and led by as many as 41 points. Illinois, which struggled in its first two games, broke the game open with a 19-8 run early in the first half. Texas Southern (1-2) committed seven turnovers during the spurt and the Illini emerged with a 24-12 lead with 9:43 left.
Illinois led 46-30 at halftime and started the second half with a 33-8 run over the first 13 minutes to put the game away. Jamar Smith's 3-pointer with seven minutes left made the score 79-38. Sean Walker scored 20 points and Ike Count added 11 for Texas Southern.
Bucknell 74, No. 17 Syracuse 69
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Kevin Bettencourt scored 20 points and keyed a late 13-2 run as Bucknell rallied past Syracuse. It was the first win for the Bison (2-0) in nine meetings with Syracuse (3-2) and sent the Orange to their second straight loss. Charles Lee had 18 points and Chris McNaughton had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bison. Demetris Nichols led Syracuse with 19 points, Gerry McNamara had 18, and Terrence Roberts had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
No. 23 Maryland 98, Chaminade 69
LAHAINA, Hawaii -- Chris McCray scored 17 points -- nine in a 23-0 run in the second half -- to lead Maryland over Chaminade in the consolation round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. The Terrapins (2-1), who lost 88-76 to No. 8 Gonzaga in the opening round, will play Arkansas for fifth place. Chaminade (0-2), the Division II host school of the eight-team tournament, brought back memories of its famed win over another Atlantic Coast Conference school in taking an 11-point lead in the first half. The Silverswords, then an NAIA school, stunned No. 1 Virginia and Ralph Sampson in December 1982. James Gist and Nik Caner-Medley added 16 points apiece for Maryland. Chris Reaves had 13 points for the Silverswords.
