Tressel's success: Jim Tressel became the first Ohio State coach since Francis Schmidt to win four of his first five games against Michigan. His is 49-13 overall at OSU and 30-10 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes have shared two conference championships in his five seasons.
Rare sight: Josh Huston's missed extra point in the first quarter was his first after 39 consecutive successful conversions this season.
Mr. Smith: Troy Smith's rushing touchdown in the first quarter was his 11th of the season, the fourth-highest total for an Ohio State quarterback. Only Les Horvath (14 in 1944), Art Schlichter (13 in 1978) and Cornelius Greene (12 in 1973) rank ahead of him.
Honoring a fallen hero: Ohio State wore special decals on its helmets in honor of former Buckeye wrestler, Marine Corps Major Ray Mendoza, who was killed in action in Iraq earlier in the week. Mendoza graduated from Ohio State in 1995.
Defensive leaders: LInebacker Anthony Schlegel led the Buckeyes with 10 tackles. It was his second game this season in double figures. He had 10 against Michigan State. The senior linebacker had seven tackles to improve his season total to 109. His 382 career stops are sixth-best in school history.
Ohio Wolverines: Warren Harding graduates Mario Manningham and Prescott Burgess played key roles for Michigan in Saturday's game. Manningham, a freshman receiver, caught four passes for 64 yards, including a 38-yarder that set up the Wolverines' last points, a 19-yard field goal by Garrett Rivas with 7:49 remaining in the game. Manningham also had one rush, for 1 yard. Burgess, a junior linebacker, led the Wolverines with 10 tackles. He was shaken up in the second quarter, an apparent right ankle injury, but returned after halftime.
Full house: Saturday's announced crowd of 111,591 was the fourth-largest in Michigan Stadium history and the 193rd consecutive crowd in excess of 100,000 at The Big House. Ohio State played nine of its 11 games in front of crowds of more than 100,000 this season.
Yard stripes: Roy Hall made his first reception in four games. ... Antonio Pittman has 1,195 rushing yards this season. ... David Patterson's sack of Chad Henne was his fourth of the season and first since he had three against Michigan State.
