No. 5 'Nova romps in debut
Villanova was too much for Stony Brook to handle, 78-35.
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Randy Foye scored 21 points and Allan Ray added 16, leading No. 5 Villanova to a 78-35 season-opening victory over Stony Brook on Friday night.
Mike Nardi added 13 points for Villanova, which outrebounded the Seawolves 46-22 and forced 18 turnovers.
Marcus Cox, Bobby Santiago and Tre Cunningham each had seven points for Stony Brook, which shot 16-for-50 and 1-for-11 from the foul line. The loss spoiled the head coaching debut of former George Washington assistant Steve Pikiell.
No. 9 Gonzaga 69,Idaho 60
SPOKANE, Wash. -- J.P. Batista scored 23 points, including three straight baskets with the game on the line, helping Gonzaga extend the nation's longest winning streak to 26 games.
The Vandals lost their sixth straight against Gonzaga, and have not beaten the Zags since 1998.
Batista shot 10-for-13 from the field and made all three of his free throws. He added nine rebounds. Derek Raivio scored 15 of his 19 in the second half, and Adam Morrison added 15 for Gonzaga.
Brett Ledbetter led Idaho with 14 points, and Tanoris Shepard had 11.
No. 11 Boston College 80, Dartmouth 61
BOSTON -- Craig Smith had 22 points and nine rebounds and Boston College opening its first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a tuneup against the less-formidable Ivy League.
Jared Dudley had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Sean Marshall scored 15 and Louis Hinnant 12 for the Eagles, who received their highest preseason ranking since 1967. BC started the season 20-0 last year and climbed as high as third in The Associated Press poll.
Boston College scored 12 consecutive points to break a 5-5 tie and Dartmouth never got closer than six points after that.
Leon Pattman scored 14 points and Mike Lang hit three 3-pointers for Dartmouth.
No. 17 Illinois 90,S. Dakota St. 65
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Dee Brown scored 19 points and James Augustine had 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead Illinois to the win in its season opener.
The only two starters remaining from last year's national runner-up carried an often sloppy offense that committed 20 turnovers and overcame a stellar performance from Champaign native Steve Holdren, who scored 28 points for the Jackrabbits.
Rich McBride scored 15 points for Illinois, and Shaun Pruitt had 11 points and nine rebounds.
South Dakota State (1-2) led twice early, but Illinois used an 8-0 run to take a 15-10 lead with 14:41 to go in the first half. Even though the Jackrabbits scored the next five points to tie the score, Illinois never trailed again.
The Jackrabbits were plagued by 21 turnovers and starters Ben Beran (11 points) and Mohammed Berte fouled out.
No. 19 Wake Forest 78,Texas Tech 73, 2OT
NEW YORK -- Justin Gray hit a jumper to force a second overtime and then scored four of his 18 points in the extra session to lift Wake Forest past Texas Tech in the consolation game of the 2K Sports College Hoop Classic.
Jarrius Jackson led Texas Tech (2-2) with 27 points, but he was 10-for-28 from the field. He hit a 12-footer in the lane with 4.9 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 58 and force overtime.
Martin Zeno added 23 points for the Red Raiders. He was 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the first overtime.
No. 23 Indiana 99,Nicholls St. 65
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Marco Killingsworth had 28 points and 13 rebounds in his Indiana debut, and Marshall Strickland added a career-high 25 points for Indiana, which won its eight straight opener.
Killingsworth, a fifth-year senior, sat out last season after transferring from Auburn. Indiana was without starters A.J. Ratliff (broken thumb) and D.J. White (broken left foot).
Stefan Blaszczynski scored 26 points for Nicholls State. Ryan Bathie added 11 points.
No. 24 Maryland 111,Fairleigh Dickinson 85
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Mike Jones had 22 points in a reserve role, and Maryland had five other players score in double figures in its season-opening rout.
Chris McCray and Nik Caner-Medley had 18 points apiece, Ekene Ibekwe scored 16, Travis Garrison 11 and James Gist 10. Jones, a junior guard, went 8-for-11 from the field and sank all three of his foul shots.
It was the first time since 1998 that Maryland reached the 100-point mark in its opener. The Terrapins shot 56 percent (36-for-70) and were 32-for-38 at the foul line.
Gordon Klaiber had 20 points, and John Blackgrove and Cameron Tyler both scored 17 for Fairleigh Dickinson (1-2), the defending Northeast Conference champions.
