Death ruled an accident
NILES -- The Trumbull County coroner's office has ruled the death of Travis L. Keirsey, 19, of Salt Springs Road, Weathersfield, as accidental by drowning. Keirsey's body was recovered Sept. 9 from a pond on private property along Salt Springs. Keirsey had been fishing with friends when he went into the water. The body was recovered while the pond was being pumped out as part of the search.
Man cited in accident
ROGERS -- The Lisbon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol cited Alexander Plana, 49, of Carrollton, Texas, for failure to control after an accident at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday.
The patrol said Plana's tractor-trailer hit the home of George Garcia, 9969 state Route 7. The house is two miles south of the village.
The amount of damage to the house wasn't known. Further information on the accident was not available.
Christmas tree donation
YOUNGSTOWN -- Peter Nagy of 2507 Kirk Road and his family are donating the city's Christmas tree. Nagy's wife, the late Loretta Nagy, planted the tree about 30 years ago. Diamond Steel Construction will move the tree Tuesday from the Kirk Road property to the square in the city's downtown.
Free dinner for families
CANFIELD -- Eight area needy families are getting a Thanksgiving dinner, thanks to the efforts of children in the Ursuline preschool and kindergarten program.
The school, which serves children ages 3 through 6, runs an annual Thanksgiving dinner food drive to help make the children aware of those who have less than they.
The children brought in food from their homes to fill food baskets over the past week and the selected families picked up their baskets Friday.
It is by example that children learn many values that are important in their lives, said Sister Jan Gier, director/principal of the school. Our generous spirit teaches children that we all need to take responsibility for the care of one another, she said.
Special meeting is set
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees have scheduled a special meeting for 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at the administration office to consider increasing an appropriation for the township's Emergency Management Services Department. The township also is looking to buy new protective clothing for the EMS department.
Tree planting in Salem
SALEM -- Davey Tree Expert Co. will be planting 28 trees in the curb lawns throughout the city this month, starting Monday. Residents are asked to be careful when driving around Davey's tree planting equipment. This planting is funded by the Salem Community Foundation and administered by the Salem Shade Tree Commission. Anyone who wants a free curb lawn tree for the next project may call the mayor's office at (330) 332-4241 Ext. 2.
Engineer is appointed
COLUMBUS -- The Columbiana County engineer has been appointed to the Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & amp; Surveyors.
Gov. Bob Taft's office said Friday that Bert Dawson was appointed to the board for a term ending Sept. 25, 2009.
Dawson, of East Liverpool, replaces Dean Ringle, whose term had expired on the panel.
Dawson has a bachelor's degree in engineering from Youngstown State University and a master's from Carnegie Mellon University.
The panel examines applicants for engineer's and surveyor's licenses. Board members are paid $19.55 per hour plus expenses.
Fund-raising dinner set
YOUNGSTOWN -- Millcreek Children's Center will have a fund-raising dinner at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at Mill Creek MetroParks D.D. and Velma Davis Education and Visitor Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens in honor of its and Sister Jerome Corcoran's 30th anniversaries.
At 89, Sister Corcoran still looks forward to her work with preschool-age children in the city. With the establishment of the Sister Jerome Fund, a fund-raising campaign to benefit the MCC's Endowment Fund, Sister Corcoran hopes to strengthen the school's capacity to serve the Youngstown community.
