HIRAM COLLEGE, HIRAM
Melissa Maskulka, a junior psychology major from Highland Heights, won fourth place in the Peace Education Essay Contest sponsored by the Central Ohioans for Peace Inc. The competition was part of the United Nations' Role in World Peace 60th Anniversary celebration. Maskulka's essay dealt with her real-life studies on war and poverty in Mexico and Guatemala.
WESTMINSTER COLLEGE, NEW WILMINGTON, PA.
Dr. Barbara Faires, professor of mathematics, was recently elected first vice president of the Mathematical Association of America. The association, with nearly 27,000 members, is the largest professional society that focuses on mathematics accessible to the undergraduate level. Faires has held national positions as chairwoman of the Budget and Audit Committee, and heads the strategic planning initiative of the MAA. She earned her undergraduate degree from East Carolina University, her master's degree from the University of South Carolina and her doctorate from Kent State University.
HIRAM COLLEGE
Sean Little of Bristolville, a senior chemistry major, was awarded an American Chemical Society $500 cash award at the Akron Council of Engineering & amp; Scientific Societies' 58th annual awards banquet. The society gives awards to outstanding chemistry students at six colleges and universities in the Akron area. Little, who plans to go to medical school, said he'll use the money to help pay for his medical school applications.
BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE, BEREA
Katherine Maruskin, Matthew Pietro and Whitney Zunic, all of Canfield, have been inducted into Alpha Lambda, a freshman honor society. Alpha Lambda recognizes high academic achievement for first-year students at the college.
SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY, SLIPPERY ROCK, PA.
Stephen Ball of Butler, a senior voice major, took top honors in the recent Chad Williamson Memorial Scholarship competition with his renditions of Mozart's "Madamina!" and Ralph Vaughn William's "The Vagabond." Ball, a bass-baritone, has performed with the Pittsburgh Opera and the SRU Jazz Ensemble.
