Akron hospital opens clinic in Boardman

BOARDMAN -- The Heart Center at Akron Children's Hospital has opened a specialty clinic to treat adults with congenital heart disease at its Boardman office at 1006 Boardman-Canfield Road.
The new clinic is part of a long-term affiliation agreement between Akron Children's Hospital and Humility of Mary Health Partners to enhance pediatric services for children and teens in the region.
Dr. John Lane, director of Akron Children's Adult Congenital Heart Service, heads the Boardman clinic. Board certified in both pediatric and adult cardiology, Dr. Lane specializes in caring for adults with congenital heart disease and helping younger patients transition to adult congenital cardiac care.
Congenital heart defects, abnormalities in the heart's structure that are present at birth, afflict one in every 100 newborns.
As medical and surgical management of congenital heart disease has improved, so has the survival rate. There are now an estimated one million adults with congenital heart conditions in the United States, hospital officials said.
"But the problems associated with the disease may never go away," Dr. Lane said. "As a result, there is a new population of adults who need specialized care to help them manage their disease."
