Prep QB has best game

His coach said the performance could have even been better.

The statistics were impressive -- 366 yards passing, three touchdowns -- but Wilson Area High School football coach Bret Comp said they could have been bigger still.
Junior quarterback D.J. Lenehan enjoyed a big game in Wilson's 29-14 victory over Northern Lehigh in a PIAA Class AA subregional playoff game, but Comp said the numbers don't totally reflect his play.
"He completed 17 of 38 passes and usually his percentage is much better than that, but we dropped nine or 10 passes," Comp said. "Imagine what his numbers would have been like with nine or 10 more completions."
Even more impressive was that his performance came against the team that had been No. 2 in The Patriot-News' statewide Class AA rankings.
Of course, this has been the year of the quarterback in Pennsylvania with at least six seniors giving verbal commitments to Division I-A schools.
Lenehan, who is 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, should attract Division I-A attention next year, according to Comp.
"He's been getting letters," said Comp, who played quarterback at East Stroudsburg University. "He has everything you'd want. He's got a cannon for a right arm. He's smart. He's a good athlete. He makes good decisions and he's cool under fire."
Holds school record
Lenehan has passed for 1,890 yards this season. He holds the school career passing mark with 3,814 yards and the career touchdown passing record of 37.
"He started for us as a freshman, so he already has 31 games," Comp said. "He's done it for us with his arm and with his legs. He's run for about 430 yards this year."
Wilson Area, located in Easton, is 9-2 and into uncharted waters. This is the deepest the football team has advanced in the playoffs.
Easton plays defending PIAA Class AA champion Lansdale Catholic (9-2) 7:30 p.m. Friday at Wissahickon.
Comp said Lenehan might have a tough time equaling this season's statistics next year since his top receiver, Brad Walter, is a senior. Against Northern Lehigh, Walter caught seven passes for a school-record 278 yards and three scores. For the season, Walter has 30 catches for 885 yards and 11 touchdowns.
