County considers donating barracks

MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County commissioners have asked their solicitor to check into what their options are on donating the old state police barracks on Pa. Route 58 to a nonprofit organization.
Commissioner Brian Beader said he received a request to consider donating the property to the Mercer Mustang Midget Football and Cheerleading League.
The group wants a place to practice, lift weights and wants to open it to other youths besides its own members, he said. Beader said the county hasn't been able to sell the building and has no use for it.
Bill Boyle, director of administrative services, said another nonprofit organization toured the building recently with an eye toward purchasing it but nothing came of it.
Commissioner Olivia Lazor said the county paid $95,000 for the building. She said in order to be sold, the building would have to be appraised. If it couldn't be sold at the fair market price, commissioners could go to court for permission to sell it for what they can get.
