In 1913, the 17th amendment to the Constitution, providing for the popular election of U.S. senators, is declared in effect. In 1961, South Africa becomes an independent republic. The Mahoning County grand jury, at the direction of Common Pleas Judge John R. Ford inspects the old county jail with a view toward recommending that county prisoners be moved back from rented quarters in the Youngstown Jail.
Bill Vukovich, winner of the Indianapolis 500 in 1953 and 1954, dies in a fiery crash while leading the race at a record-making speed of 136 mph. The race is won by Bill Sweikert with an average speed of 128 mph. The winner's purse: $32,000.
