Ursuline's Kelton Person running for state berth

CANTON -- Ursuline High's Kelton Person and Poland's doubles partners Don Somers and Chad Ruehs remained in contention for state tournament berths at the Division II district tennis tournament at Weis Parks Thursday.
Person won his first match, defeating Victor Hill of Vermilion, 6-3, 6-2, but then he was defeated by Matt Royer of Mentor Lake Catholic, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
Person, who was the sectional champion, will face Richard Garrett of Rocky River in the consolation semifinals on Saturday. The top five singles and doubles finishers qualify for the state tournament.
In other singles first-round matches, Poland's Luke Duchek lost to Garrett, 6-3, 6-2, and Warren Kennedy's David Ceglia was defeated by Toby Auwerter of University School, 6-0, 6-1.
Three of the four championship semifinalists are from University School.
Somers and Ruehs won their first-round match, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, over Adam Cohn and William Fields of Gates Mills Hawken. In the quarterfinals, the Poland duo lost to Chagrin Falls' Ben Hurtuk and Ben Isaacson, 6-4, 6-2. They will play Steven Shinn and Paul Sidhu of University School in the consolation semifinals on Saturday.
Ursuline's A.J. and Josh Cook lost in the first round to Robert Stein and Nathan Hobrath of Walsh Jesuit, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3, and Poland's Fred Romeo and Matt McElroy were defeated by Alex Campanelli and Devin Vrabel of Canton Central Catholic, 6-2, 6-4.
Division I
ROCKY RIVER -- Scott Warden of Boardman was eliminated in a first round singles match at Tri-City Park.
Warden was defeated by Brad Noel of Westlake, 6-0, 6-0.
