AUSTINTOWN -- Police recovered suspected drugs, a police scanner and a handcuff key early Saturday after chasing a car whose driver they say committed several traffic offenses before bailing from the car and fleeing on foot.
An officer saw the car pull onto Mahoning Avenue near Idaho Road about 2:30 a.m. without turning on its headlights. The driver didn't respond when the officer activated the cruiser's lights and then sped up when the cruiser's siren began.
Police followed the car and said it ran through red lights along Mahoning at Raccoon, Four Mile Run and Meridian roads. Speeds reached about 62 mph, police said. The posted speed limit is 35 mph.
The car continued into Youngstown and the driver and a passenger jumped out of the car and fled on foot in opposite directions. The car drifted into a fire hydrant on South Osborne Avenue, Youngstown, causing minor damage.
Police didn't locate the two men but found the drugs, key, scanner, a cell phone, the shirt worn by the driver and a left sneaker.
