Canfield tops Boardman in Myrtle Beach



MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Lauren Sulick struck out five batters and walked none as the Canfield High softball team defeated Boardman 4-1 Tuesday in the Lady Brave Invitational Tournament.
Kerri Haurin, Danielle Spencer and Bre Halfhill each had RBI singles for the Cardinals, who scored all their runs in the fourth inning.
Samantha Peters had an RBI single for the Spartans (1-1). Mallory Hay had a triple and pitcher Ashley DiDomenico (1-1) had six strikeouts and no walks.
Western Reserve 1, Chaney 0
BERLIN CENTER -- Katie Harmon pitched a one-hitter, struck out 12 and walked one in the season opener for both schools.
Cassie Zimmerman singled with one away, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt single by Tarah Young putting runners at first and second. Lindsay Kuebler bunted and Zimmerman scored on an error.
Tarea Koontz, leading off the seventh inning for Chaney, singled. Harman then got the next three batters out on a fielder' choice, a ground out and a strikeout.
Harmon hit a pair of singles for the Blue Devils, who had four hits.
Koontz was the losing pitcher for the Cowboys, with one strikeout and a walk.
Newton Falls 6, Mineral Ridge 2
MINERAL RIDGE -- Winning pitcher Emily Montgomery aided her own cause with a two-run single in the top of the seventh.
DeEsta Sheldon doubled in two more runs to break open a close game. Melanie Sparks hit a doubled and two singles for the Rams.
Marisa Matis, Cassee Piquet and Montgomery hit a pair of season apiece for the Tigers.
Sebring 3, Lowellville 2
SEBRING -- Kristin Schaffer struck out three and walked two to lead the Trojans to a victory in the opener for both teams. Juli Peterson had two hits and Kathy Peterson added a double for the Rockets. Carla Blinsky struck out four and walked one, allowing one run in six innings of relief.
Baseball
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Springfield a season opening 3-2 victory over East Palestine. Dane Dobson scored the winning run with one out for the Tigers (1-0).
Chris Martin had two hits and Aaron Wood had a home run to lead the Tigers, who trailed 2-0. Lou Summers picked up the mound win in relief.
West Branch 8, Akron Springfield 0
AKRON -- Tad Gaspar worked five innings, allowed two hits and struck out 11. Willy Graham and Chad Kitzmiller each went an inning in relief and pitched shutout ball, with Kitzmiller striking out two.
Marc Possage hit a two-run home run for the Warriors, while Steve McNeely, John Wallack and Gaspar collected two singles apiece.
Sean Howald hit a double to pace Springfield.
