YOUNGSTOWN -- Not long after The Vindicator hit the streets Monday, a most-wanted fugitive featured on page B1 was caught by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, acting on a tip. Gabriel Artis, 41, was found on McBride Street, said Cathy Jones, deputy U.S. marshal. Artis was wanted on a warrant charging him with a parole violation in a felonious assault case.
Drug charges in Boardman
BOARDMAN -- A McArthur Drive woman was to appear in court this morning in Mahoning County Court to face drug charges after police say they found 100 pounds of marijuana in her home.
Michelle Giuliani, 42, was charged with trafficking in marijuana in the vicinity of a minor and drug possession, both felonies, and misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and permitting drug abuse.
Detectives said a young child was in Giuliani's McArthur Drive home where police found 100 pounds of marijuana.
Gunfire draws arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- An investigation into gunfire in the area of Ravenwood Avenue and Erie Street around 1:15 a.m. Monday led to the arrest of David Perry, 16, of Erie on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon. Police found a .25-caliber handgun in Perry's pants, reports show. There's no indication that a boy who was with Perry on the corner was charged. The person who called in the gunfire complaint said the boys who were involved were at the corner of Ravenwood and Erie.
Streets to be swept
LOWELLVILLE -- The village will be sweeping streets the week of April 11-15.
Village officials noted that because of the harsh winter, sidewalks are covered with slag.
Residents are being asked to sweep all debris from their sidewalks into the road for cleanup.
All vehicles should be off of the streets during the street sweeping.
Arson suspected
YOUNGSTOWN -- Arson is believed to be the cause of a fire at a vacant duplex at 131-133 E. Marion Ave., said fire Lt. Kevin Johnson. The fire at 7:14 p.m. Sunday began on the second floor and caused the roof to collapse, he said. Damage was estimated at $20,000, a total loss. Johnson said the place was being used as a dump, and trash was everywhere.
Joint recital planned
ALLIANCE -- Lindsay Henschel, a senior music education major, and Tarion Young, a junior music and theater major, will perform a junior joint recital at 8 p.m. Thursday in Presser Recital Hall.
Henschel, a soprano, is from Mentor. Alliance native Young is a tenor. Janelle Phinney will accompany on piano.
The performance will include works from Mozart, Bellini, Vivaldi and other composers.
The concert is free and open to the public.
Victims' Advocate Award
BOARDMAN -- The 2005 Outstanding Victims' Advocate Award, presented by Atty. Clair M. Carlin, will be shared this year by Lisa Knight-Jordan of Sojourner House and Darra Tolle of the Mahoning County prosecutor's office.
Knight-Jordan is a social worker at Sojourner House and has been a tireless advocate for victims, Carlin said.
Tolle is a victim witness coordinator as part of the prosecutor's Juvenile Court Division.
The award will be presented at a Victims' Week breakfast hosted by Carlin at The Holiday Inn in Boardman at 7:30 a.m. April 13
