Susan Yarab honored as Gem of the Year
The honoree is a 13-year member and past president of the organization.
LIBERTY -- Susan Yarab of Poland was honored as Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance's Gem of the Year during a joint dinner meeting with the medical society March 18 at Youngstown County Club.
The event also served as an acknowledgment of Doctor's Day, March 31, and a tribute to the late Ann Might, 2004 alliance president, as Golden Gem of the Year. The award is given to a senior member who's given outstanding service to the alliance.
The honoree
Yarab has 18 years of experience as a physical therapist with a specialization in multiple rheumatological disorders, is a volunteer for the Arthritis Foundation and lectures for local fibromyalgia support groups.
The Youngstown native joined the alliance 13 years ago and has served in many capacities with the organization since then, including as president in 2000.
As a committee member she helped raise funds for Forum Health's Silver Lining Cancer Fund; Hospice of the Valley; the Rich Center for Autism at Youngstown State University; the Touched by Nathan Foundation, which helps Mahoning Valley babies born with fragile conditions; Potential Development Program, which focuses on developmentally delayed children; Sojourner House and the YWCA'S battered persons shelters.
At the state level, she was chairwoman of the American Medical Association's Foundation in 2001-2003, raising money for medical students, and has been serving as the state alliance health promotion chairwoman since 2003. She also is collaborating nationally with the AMA and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to reduce underage drinking.
Yarab holds an undergraduate degree in exercise science from the University of South Carolina, a bachelor's in physical therapy from the Medical University of South Carolina, and a master's in orthopedic physical therapy from the University of Indianapolis. She also has received advanced board certification from the American Physical Therapy Association in Geriatrics.
She owns of PM & amp;R, North Physical Therapy Clinic, as well as Power Pilates, LLC matwork and reformer studio in Boardman.
She and her husband, Dr. Ron Yarab, live in Poland with their daughter, Daytona.
