Event to educate community about drugs

Saturday, March 26, 2005

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- A community program about drug trends and dangers, "Do You Know," is coming to Westminster College April 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.
The event is free and open to the public, said Judy Duda, health center director at Westminster College. Training will focus on various drugs, such as alcohol and street drugs.
The event is designed to inform community members on the types of drugs children are exposed to, what to do if you suspect drug use or trafficking and how to help someone with a drug or alcohol problem.
The program will feature Agent Elaine Surma, senior supervisory narcotics agent for the state Bureau of Narcotic Investigation and Drug Control in Erie, and Gary Cappello, agent of the consumer division.
Surma is a frequent participant in Lawrence County's Adopt-a-School program. She began her law enforcement career 27 years ago as a special agent for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in the Pennsylvania Department of Justice.
The event is sponsored by Westminster College, Pennsylvania Department of Health, Lawrence County Drug and Alcohol Commission and the Lawrence County District Attorney, Matthew Mangino.
