YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County tax incentive review council approved three abatements for companies Wednesday after getting a few questions answered.
The panel meets annually to review the enterprise zone tax abatements between the county and companies.
The council placed a resolution approving abatements for 18 companies for another year before commissioners for their meeting today.
The council, composed of representatives from either school districts, townships, or cities and villages, recommends to the county commissioners whether tax breaks should continue.
At its meeting earlier this month, county Auditor George Tablack and other council members wanted clarification on the abatement deal for Gerdau Ameristeel/Oxford Co., a steel processing company in Jackson Township. The company provided that clarification, and council representatives continued the 60 percent, eight-year abatement on real and personal property approved in January 2002, said Thomas J. Presby, manager, business assistance projects, for the Regional Chamber.
The council also continued abatements for Malmer and Frangopoulous medical facility in Campbell, and for Advance Recycling Systems, McCartney Road, which designs and produces mobile abrasive blasting systems, dust collectors and rapid deployment platforms. Those abatements were held up earlier this month because representatives from political subdivisions where the companies are located failed to attend the annual meeting earlier this month to voice their approval or disapproval.
