Steroids finescould be dropped
NEW YORK -- Baseball players and owners agreed Sunday to drop the possibility of fines for steroid use, leaving suspensions as the only discipline.
The fines were repeatedly criticized as inadequate by representatives who grilled baseball officials at a U.S. House Government Reform Committee hearing last Thursday. Management officials told the committee they were willing to eliminate the fine provision, held over from baseball's first drug-testing agreement in 2002, but union head Donald Fehr had said he would have to consult with players.
Rob Manfred, baseball's executive vice president for labor relations, said Sunday that Fehr had agreed to eliminate fines as a possible punishment.
Baseball's new agreement had called for a 10-day suspension or up to $10,000 fine for a first positive test. A second positive was to result in a 30-day suspension or up to $25,000 fine, a third in a 60-day suspension or up to $50,000 fine and a four in a one-year suspension or up to $100,000 fine.
Sen. John McCain said he thought legislation may be needed to force a tougher plan.
"It just seems to me they can't be trusted," the Arizona Republican told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday. "It seems to me that we ought to seriously consider ... a law that says all professional sports have a minimum level of performance-enhancing drug testing."

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Former California amateur star Mark Johnson won in just his 14th start on the Champions Tour, shooting a 1-under 70 for a four-stroke victory in the Toshiba Senior Classic.
The 50-year-old Johnson, the qualifying tournament winner known as the "Beer Man" because he drove a Budweiser truck for 18 years before turning pro, had a 13-under 200 total on the Newport Beach Country Club course.
Johnson, who earned $247,500, eagled the par-5 15th and 18th holes in an up-and-down final round that included two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey. He began the day with a three-stroke lead over Keith Fergus after shooting a 63 on Saturday.
Fergus (71) and Wayne Levi (70) tied for second at 9 under, and first-round leader Gil Morgan (70), Don Pooley (65) and John Bland (69) followed at 8 under.
Federer defendsPacific Life title
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Top-ranked Roger Federer had every part of his game working, beating No. 2 Lleyton Hewitt 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 to successfully defend his Pacific Life Open title.
Federer, on a roll that has carried him to 42 wins in his last 43 matches, displayed his usual dazzling array of shots.
Hitting powerful, accurate groundstrokes that kept his Australian opponent scrambling back and forth at the baseline, Federer mixed in winning volleys, winning drop shots and the occasional overhead that he rarely failed to put away.
Federer extended his winning streak over Hewitt to seven in a row, including last year's U.S. Open final.

HERSHEY, Pa. -- Mike Souza scored twice and Martin Hlinka assisted on all three goals to lead the Hershey Bears to a 3-0 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League.
Goaltender Peter Budaj made 23 saves to record his 28th win and fifth shutout of the season.
Pens goalie Marc-Andre Fleury got trapped behind the cage and Souza gave the Bears a 1-0 lead at 12:20 of the middle period when he tucked the puck past the sliding netminder.
The win moved Hershey (35-29-2-1, 73 points) to within five points of fourth place Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (33-20-6-6, 78 points) in the race for the final East Division playoff position.
