Superior school orchestras
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman High School Chamber, Classical and Symphony orchestras continued a long tradition of excellence at the State Orchestra Adjudicated event, held at Lakewood High School.
The 136-member symphony orchestra continued the longest string of unbroken superior ratings in the state with another superior rating. The symphony has received superior ratings consecutively since 1973. The 88-member classical orchestra received an excellent rating, and the 34-member chamber orchestra received a superior rating.
The next regular concert of the orchestras will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.
Classes collect for kids
VIENNA -- Creative cuisine classes taught by Connie David from Mathews High School organized a week-long fund-raiser called "Coins for Kids," which raised $2,897.38 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Over the past eight years, Mathews High School has collected $25,149.98 for St. Jude's.
Seventh-period classes competed with one another to see which class could raise the most money per person. The winners will receive a free luncheon at the Quaker Steak and Lube Restaurant in Sharon, courtesy of Lou DeMarco, high school principal.
The class collecting the most money raised $1,335.12 or $70.27 per student. The students are: Clayton Beatty, Ashley Bickel, Rebecka Bush, Shania Crislip, Joshua Dahmen, Kelly Davis, James DeFrance, Stephanie Fabian, Tara Ford, Matthew Hostetler, Adam Jordan, Megan McConahy, Amber Saltznan, Amanda Sudon, Teri Turney, John Whitfield, Andrew Winans, Rachel Woolf and Richard Woolf.
Kids pilot rescue program
LEETONIA -- Eighth-grade pupils of Leetonia Middle School were chosen to pilot two new e-missions for the Challenger Learning Center at Wheeling Jesuit University. An e-mission is a live electronic simulation that affords pupils a learning experience. Using computers, the Internet and a video camera, an instructor in Wheeling aids the pupils in completing tasks in a live rescue simulation.
Teachers Pat Troy and Debbie Bair will be working with instructors from the center to introduce two new scenarios: fire scene investigations and extra-vehicular activity. Pupils will work in teams varying from four to eight members with job-specific tasks to perform.
Enrollment at Victory
LIBERTY -- Victory Christian School is now enrolling pupils in grades K-12 for the 2005-06 school year. Victory Christian School is a state-accredited school in its 28th year of service to the Christian community. Heartland photo wins
COLUMBIANA -- Nate Wolford, a senior at Heartland Christian School, was awarded first place in the state-wide VSA Arts Competition. His photograph titled "Never-Ending Forest," a black-and-white picture taken in Beaver Creek State Park, won Wolford $500. Kathryn Holm is his photography instructor.
1st place: reason to cheer
BOARDMAN -- The Glenwood Middle School cheerleaders won first place at the third annual Youngstown State University cheerleading competition. This makes two competitions in which the girls placed first in their division. The girls are coached by Lisa Luchey with choreography by Katie Drummund. Team members include Amanda Poracky, Sarah Turner, Mandi Lukehart, Savanna Sandrock, Samantha Jones, Shelby Crowley, Haley Crossen, Brittany Gabriele , Natalie Passarelli, Amelia Caps, Toni Soccorsi, Alyssa Volosin, Lea Byers, Ashlee Frazzini, Ashley Rodgers, and Janine Iacobucci.
Music camp in June
HIRAM -- Hiram College is offering a week-long summer music camp June 13-18 for students in grades nine to 12. The camp is for singers; players of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments; pianists; harpists; and guitarists. Activities include daily musicianship classes, private and class lessons, instrumental and vocal ensembles, and a final, all-inclusive concert.
Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Students are encouraged to stay on campus to take advantage of social and cultural activities. Scholarship contest
BOARDMAN --The 27 First News Caring for Our Community campaign announced the winners of its annual scholarship contest. More than 600 pupils wrote public service announcements for a charity. The winner and five runners-up are being featured in commercials airing on 27 WKBN this month. They are:Winner: Jason Alan Frederick, a senior at LaBrae High School. His entry featured Northeast Ohio Adoption Services.First runner-up: Stephanie Vincent, a senior at New Castle Senior High School. Her entry featured the American Cancer Society.Second runner-up: Bethany Powell, a senior at Chaney High School. Her entry featured Mill Creek MetroParks.Third runner-up: Brittany Welsh, a senior at Laurel High School. Her entry featured Someplace Safe.Fourth runner-up: Cory Ann Kekich, a senior at Hubbard High School. Her entry featured Mothers Against Drunk Driving.Fifth runner-up: David Joseph Bertolasio, a senior at Kennedy Catholic, Hermitage, Pa. His entry featured Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
Merecedes-Benz offers scholarship
AUSTINTOWN -- Mercedes-Benz, a leader in the automotive industry, invites students who will be the first from their family to attend college or vocational school to apply for scholarships through Drive Your Future: The Mercedes-Benz USA Scholarship Program.
The program, which is supported by Mercedes-Benz dealers nationwide, including Fred Martin Inc., has committed $1 million for the 2005 scholarship program. Five hundred students from across the country will receive a one-time, $2,000 scholarship. Awards will be based on financial need and exceptional achievement in the areas of academic performance, leadership and community activities.
