Tow truck driver is killed in I-80 crash
LOGANTON, Pa. (AP) -- A Clinton County tow truck operator was struck and killed on westbound Interstate 80 as he tried to assist a motorist, state police said. Donald Eugene Snook, 47, an employee of Bressler's Garage, was killed instantly in the 6:45 a.m. Friday accident, according to John Hanna, the county's chief deputy coroner.
Snook was struck as he was pulling up the disabled car, whose driver lost control on the snow-covered highway, onto the tow truck, said Dave Frankenberger, assistant chief of the Sugar Valley Volunteer Fire Co.
Jewel Y. Dunn, 36, of State College, lost control of her 1997 Subaru on the slippery highway, then struck Snook and his tow truck, police said.
Her car rolled twice as it crossed both westbound lanes after hitting the victim, Frankenberger said. He said Dunn and a passenger, her daughter, were taken to a hospital.
Their conditions were not immediately available.
Frankenberger said that Snook was the second pedestrian this season to be killed on I-80 in the area while trying to help a stranded motorist.
Robert Bressler, owner of the garage where Snook worked, said the two had known each other for 42 years and were good friends.
"He was standing at the wrong place at the wrong time," Bressler said.
