TRUMBULL COUNTY Ex-jailer jailed for aiding escape wins early release from prison

The prosecutor's office did not oppose the early release.
WARREN -- A former Trumbull County jailer who had admitted agreeing to help a federal inmate escape from the jail has been released early from prison.
Judge John Stuard of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court granted Michael Battee's request during a brief hearing Thursday.
"We did not oppose the motion," said Chuck Morrow, an assistant Trumbull County prosecutor. "Mr. Battee demonstrated remorse and we believe he has made significant changes in his life since going to prison."
Battee served eight months of a two-year sentence. His attorney, Sam Bluedorn, could not be reached to comment.
Battee, 35, of Warren, pleaded guilty last year to one count each of complicity to commit escape and dereliction of duty and seven counts of bribery.
He could have faced a maximum of 40 years in prison on all the charges. He was sentenced in September to two years in prison.
Battee also testified in the trial of his co-defendant Michelle Miller.
Miller was convicted in June of a bribery charge and was sentenced to two years in prison.
Unsuccessful escape
Officials say Miller and Battee were bribed by a federal inmate in the county jail who wanted to escape. The inmate said he would give the jailers $40,000 if they helped him escape, officials said.
The inmate did not escape, officials said.
The sheriff's department had previously housed federal inmates on the jail's fourth floor.
Battee's charge of dereliction of duty stems from his relationship with a woman who served time in the county jail, officials say.
Sheriff Thomas Altiere said the investigation was handled by the Youngstown office of the FBI.
