Ammo plant board sets another meeting

Friday, March 11, 2005

RAVENNA -- The Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant's restoration advisory board plans another in its series of public meetings.
This session will be from 6 to 8 p.m. March 16 at Windham Township Hall. That's at the intersection of West Center and North Main streets.
These meetings provide a forum on the ongoing environmental restoration at the facility.
The ammunition plant plans to burn excess production buildings contaminated with explosives and paint with PCBs to make them safe for conventional demolition.
The buildings, officials said, must be removed for the Ohio Army National Guard to develop the property for training.
To be discussed at the meeting are the sampling method being used to determine the type and extent of contamination, and how proposed "engineered burns" of buildings there would work.
An official with the U.S. EPA will discuss that agency's role at the site; it has only begun to evaluate the proposed project.
