Man sentenced 28 years in prison for killing baby

AKRON (AP) -- A man previously convicted of child endangerment was sentenced Wednesday to 28 years in prison for killing a 13-month-old girl.
Daniel S. Duffield, 32, was convicted on charges of murder, felonious assault and child endangering. Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said Duffield killed Jacqueline Cooper. At sentencing, Duffield told Common Pleas Judge Marvin Shapiro that he was not responsible for the child's abuse and death Oct. 6 and that he grieved for her.
A jury convicted him March 1.
Shapiro noted that Duffield had a prior child endangering conviction in Portage County involving another child.
The Cooper girl had been pierced with a tattoo needle about 40 times. The child suffered a broken neck and numerous broken bones.
The mother, Vanessa Lane McGlumphy, 25, was previously sentenced to 10 years, convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
