REGION
Steelers re-signWillie Williams
PITTSBURGH -- Cornerback Willie Williams re-signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers for another two years on Monday.
The unrestricted free agent started the final 10 regular-season games last season and both playoff games after starting cornerback Chad Scott injured his knee Oct. 17 against Dallas. Williams finished the season with 57 tackles, one sack and one interception.
Next year will mark Williams' 13th NFL season. He was drafted by the Steelers in 1993 in the sixth round and spent several years with the Seattle Seahawks before returning to Pittsburgh in 2004.
The Steelers released Scott and tight end Jay Riemersma last month in salary-cap moves. The Steelers were only $500,000 under the salary cap at season's end and needed to trim several contracts, partly because of performance bonuses they paid following their 15-1 regular season.

CLEVELAND -- Chet Mason of Miami (Ohio) was named the Mid-American Conference's defensive player of the year Monday for helping the RedHawks hold opponents to 61 points per game.
