AUSTINTOWN -- A man was in stable condition Monday at St. Elizabeth Health Center after being stabbed at a Clarkins Drive hotel over the weekend.
Erick G. Ramirez, no age or address available, told police early Saturday through a translator that the man with whom he was sharing the room at the Comfort Inn stabbed him several times with an unknown object.
The other man, Cesar O. Valazquez, 24, of Columbus, who was born in Mexico, was charged with felonious assault. Immigration authorities were notified because Valazquez's resident alien identification card was invalid, reports show.
Warrant expected
YOUNGSTOWN -- A murder warrant was expected to be issued Monday for Charles E. Lynch, 27, of Chicago Avenue, said Youngstown police Lt. Robin Lees. Lynch is accused in the drive-by shooting of Martin Walker III, 32, of South Truesdale Avenue. Walker was gunned down Saturday night as he stood in front of the F & amp;N Market on Shehy Street. He died early Sunday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Rape trial to begin
YOUNGSTOWN -- Opening statements are expected Wednesday in the trial of Eddie L. Bandy, 39, of West Chalmers Avenue, who is charged with the rape of a teenage girl in October 2000.
Jurors will view the scene where the attack took place in a park on the city's South Side before hearing the opening statements. The victim, 14 at the time, is now 18.
Bandy faces a possible prison term of 10 years. He has been in Mahoning County jail without bond since September 2001.
Bandy is represented by Atty. John B. Juhasz. Dawn Krueger and Tim Franken, assistant county prosecutors, are handling the state's case, which is being tried before Judge R. Scott Krichbaum.
Two homes shot
WARREN -- Two Jefferson Street Southwest residences were shot recently.
Police said a slug was recovered Friday morning from 1787 Jefferson St. after someone discharged a firearm into the home Thursday night. At 5 p.m. Friday, someone shot into 2025 Jefferson St. No injuries were reported.
Offices' money stolen
WARREN -- Someone broke into two offices at Riverside Square, 1400 Tod Ave. N.W., and took money, police said Monday. The break-in was reported Friday. Riverside Square is a former hospital that has been converted to office spaces.
Fireman promoted
YOUNGSTOWN -- James Sapp of the Youngstown Fire Department was to be promoted today from lieutenant to captain by Fire Chief John J. O'Neill Jr. Sapp, 39, has been with the department since August 1991.
City history explored
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Young Leaders Advisory Board and the Mahoning Valley Historical Society are presenting "P. Ross Berry: Building Youngstown: Monuments and Community" at 7 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave.
Local historian Vince Shivers will speak about how architect Berry helped shape Youngstown and built its monuments. This event is co-sponsored by Youngstown Cityscape Education and Historic Preservation Committee and is free and open to the public. Call (330) 743-2589 for reservations, which are required.
Break-ins investigated
GIRARD -- Police are investigating break-ins of 11 vehicles, including a water department truck. According to reports, the vehicles were broken into early Sunday. Most of the vehicles were located on East Kline and East Liberty street. Owners of the vehicles said CDs, gloves and other valuables were stolen.
