Onstar tracks stolen car
YOUNGSTOWN -- Onstar, an in-vehicle safety and security system, tracked a 2005 GMC Envoy that had been reported stolen in Austintown to the Northside pool parking lot off Belmont Avenue. Austintown police, who reported the theft to Onstar, called city police with the location Monday afternoon. The occupant, John W. Smith, 28, of Felicia Avenue, told police that he paid $100 to rent the vehicle from a man who drove up as he was walking on Dearborn Street. Smith was arrested on charges of receiving stolen property and possession of cocaine. He was arraigned Tuesday in municipal court. Bond was set at $77,500.
Crash kills man, 49
BERLIN CENTER -- William E. Riggs, 49, of Leffingwell Road, Berlin Center, died from injuries he received in a two-vehicle crash on state Route 534 around 10:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield post. The patrol said a pickup truck driven northbound by William J. Meier, 49, of Knox School Road, Beloit, collided head-on with Riggs' southbound car, which went left of center. Both vehicles suffered heavy front-end damage. Meier was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center. A medevac helicopter took Riggs to the hospital, where he died, the patrol said. The crash remains under investigation.
Girard landfill talk
HUBBARD -- Hubbard Environmental & amp; Land Preservation will hold its regular meeting at 7 p.m. today in city council chambers. The citizens group will discuss the proposed landfill in Girard and the group's next fund-raiser.
Lockup fund-raiser
YOUNGSTOWN -- About 300 Youngstown business community members will voluntarily be placed behind bars for an hour today to fight neuromuscular diseases as part of the Muscular Dystrophy Association's lockup event. The volunteers will serve their time between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Youngstown State University's Penguin Club. During that time, the volunteers will have their mug shots taken, and call friends and family to raise their $1,200 bail before being released. MDA is a national voluntary health agency working to defeat more than 40 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research.
Grantseeking Basics
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Public Library, 305 Wick Ave., will host a Grant Center orientation program 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Main Library Meeting Room. The free program, "Grantseeking Basics: An Orientation to the Funding Research Process," will focus on familiarizing new non-profit organizations with the Library's resources. The grant information applies to nonprofit organizations seeking information on funding sources and fund raising. Interested parties can place reservations by calling (330) 744-8636 and pressing "2" at the phone prompt for "Reference Information."
Pools open for summer
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city's two pools are now open daily from 1 to 8 p.m. until Aug. 17. The pools are in North Park off Belmont Avenue, and the Borts Pool on the West Side, off of Belle Vista Drive. Admission is 50 cents for children, and $1 for adults.
Storm knocks out power
A fast-moving rainstorm Tuesday afternoon knocked out power to 894 Ohio Edison customers in Canfield and 2,175 in the Lisbon area, said Paul Harkey, spokesman for the utility. Harkey said high winds and lightning caused the outages around 4 p.m.
