Principal to walk tocenter of Canfield today
BOARDMAN -- The principal of Stadium Drive Elementary School expects to hit the center of Canfield today before completing the final leg of his journey later this week.
Michael Notar, who started walking from Columbus on June 18, was to walk this morning from a Salem hotel into Canfield.
He plans to walk from Canfield to Boardman Park on July 3 for the township's Independence Day celebration.
Notar raised $40,000 for The Matthew Fund, a research fund established at The Ohio State University by the family of Matthew O'Nesti.
The Stadium Drive 8-year-old was diagnosed at 18 months with spinal muscular atrophy, an incurable genetic disease that affects muscles used for activities like walking and swallowing.
Air quality advisory
AUSTINTOWN -- Eastgate Regional Council of Governments has issued an air quality advisory for today for the Mahoning Valley.
The advisory is because of particle pollution. A cold front approaching the valley will bring clouds, rain showers and scattered thunderstorms to the Youngstown region, limiting ozone formation.
Increased moisture in the atmosphere will enhance particle formation.
Residents can help keep the air clean by avoiding revving or idling engines for more than 30 seconds, not waiting in long drive-through lines, using gasoline-powered lawn equipment, filling vehicle gas tanks after 7 p.m. and tightening the gas caps on vehicles.
Criminal damage
AUSTINTOWN -- Two 18-year-olds were charged over the weekend with using firecrackers to damage people's mailboxes.
Robert E. Kornack, 18, Pinecrest Avenue, and Aaron M. Bohr, 18, Alderwood Drive, Canfield, each were charged with criminal damage and open container violations, both misdemeanors.
Police received a call early Sunday that the occupants of a vehicle had blown up a mailbox on Penny Lane and one on Warwick Drive South.
Aluminum siding theft
YOUNGSTOWN -- Much of the aluminum siding at 2541 Hunter St. had been stripped and placed in the bed of a Dodge truck when police arrived Sunday evening.
Ethan Zalovcik, 26, of Mahoning Avenue was arrested on a theft charge when he came out of the house carrying several pieces of aluminum, including screens, reports show. Zalovcik told police he intended to sell the aluminum as scrap.
He pleaded innocent at an arraignment Monday.
Youngstown woman claims jackpot winnings
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Youngstown woman, one of three Rolling Cash 5 winners Saturday, came forward Monday to claim her part of the $110,000 jackpot.
Jaclyn M. Mulac will receive $36,667 minus the mandatory federal and state taxes totaling 28.5 percent.
Mulac purchased the winning ticket for Saturday's drawing at Check-N-Go Mini Mart, 1739 Wilson Ave. Mulac picked her own numbers.
Check-N-Go Mini Mart receives a $500 bonus for selling a winning ticket.
Man, 50, arraigned on felonious assault charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Stanley Williams, 50, of Almyra Avenue was arraigned Monday in municipal court on a felonious assault charge. Bond was set at $25,000. Police said Williams stabbed his son in the left side with a butcher knife around 11 p.m. Sunday at their home during an argument over food being cooked. The son was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
