HOWLAND -- Universal Development has withdrawn its request to change the zoning of 31.7 acres in the township.
Township trustees scheduled a public hearing for 6:45 p.m. July 13 to accept the formal withdrawal, said township Administrator Darlene St. George.
The site consists of three parcels between Howland Wilson Road and state Route 82. Universal Development had requested the zoning be changed from the existing "R1," single family, to "R/A-1," residential apartments (3- to 6-unit buildings).
The Trumbull County Planning Commission recommended the proposed zone change be denied, and many Howland Township residents were opposed to the change.
In other business, the trustees hired Jonathan V. Coleman as a full-time police officer, beginning July 1, on the recommendation of Police Chief Paul Monroe and St. George. Coleman will receive $16.54 an hour, pension pickup and benefits. The new hire is funded by a grant, St. George said.
