Sleeping man shot
YOUNGSTOWN -- An East Judson Avenue man awoke around 3:15 a.m. Tuesday with a pain in his left arm from a bullet graze. Police found a bullet hole in the north bedroom wall that traveled through the headboard of the 21-year-old victim's bed. Another bullet hole was found in the front door glass. The man was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center. He told police he couldn't think why someone would want to shoot him.
Three arson reports
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three vacant houses were deliberately set on fire early Tuesday, said Lt. Kevin Johnson of the arson bureau. The first fire at 1003 Parkview Ave. was reported at 1:23 a.m. and the damage estimated at $5,000, a total loss. Johnson said the second fire occurred at 4:01 a.m. at 1325 Kensington Ave. and the damage was $10,000, about one-third the value. The third fire was reported at 4:39 a.m. at 35 Tacoma Ave. Johnson said damage was $1,000 to the structure worth roughly $10,000.
Fifth Avenue closing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fifth Avenue between Grant and Wood streets will be closed for the Soap Box Derby 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday evening. Traffic will be permitted to cross Fifth Avenue at Lincoln in the evening. However, all other portions of Fifth Avenue will remain closed.
The race will begin 8 a.m. Saturday. If it is rained out, it will continue at 9 a.m. Sunday. The road closure will end around 8 p.m. Sunday. All motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
Niles water boil alert
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Mahoning Valley Sanitary District is advising that because of a main line break customers who receive their water through Niles should boil their water.
The boil advisory means customers should bring water to a rapid boil for at least three to five minutes. This involves customers from all streets west of Kelly Street and also Prospect Street and Payne Street. The boil alert will be in effect until further notice.
Man guilty of shaking son
WARREN -- A 35-year-old city man, accused of violently shaking his infant son, has pleaded guilty to a felonious assault charge.
James Kruppa entered the plea Tuesday in the courtroom of Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dismissed a charge of child endangering, said Atty. Tony Consoldane of the Ohio Public Defender's Commission. Kruppa, of Federle Drive, could face up to eight years in prison, Consoldane said. Prosecutors said Kruppa shook his 8-week old infant son Dec. 12.
Christmas bells in July
NEWTON FALLS -- The Salvation Army, Newton Falls Service Unit is having Christmas in July and needs volunteers to ring kettles from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 1-3 at IGA and Giant Eagle.

Petro at Reagan Dinner
BOARDMAN -- The Mahoning County Republican Organization is holding its Reagan Dinner at 6 p.m. July 7 at the Georgetown on South Avenue. The guest speaker is Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro, a 2006 gubernatorial candidate.
Tickets are $35 each and are available at Republican headquarters on U.S. Route 224.
Forte on the Fifty act
YOUNGSTOWN -- Come Together, a Beatles tribute band, will perform at the 10th annual Forte on the Fifty celebration July 9 at Youngstown State University's Stambaugh Stadium.
The event begins at 7:30 p.m. with a performance by the Dana All-Star Band, followed by Come Together at 8:30 p.m., and concludes with a fireworks show by B.J. Alan Fireworks Co.
