YOUNGSTOWN -- A common pleas court magistrate set bond at $1 million each for two men accused of committing murders in Youngstown.
Robert Andrews, a Mahoning County assistant prosecutor, requested the high bonds for Timothy A. Overman, 21, of Poland, and Janero Mitchell, 19, of New York Avenue, at their arraignments Tuesday in common pleas court before Magistrate Eugene J. Fehr.
Fehr granted Andrews' request.
Overman is charged in the Jan. 20, 2004, murder of Jason W. Gasior Jr., 23, of Struthers. Gasior had been shot in the head and body in a bed at his South Side apartment.
Mitchell is charged in the May 7 shooting death of Anthony McBride, 39. McBride was found shot to death on the sidewalk on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
A grand jury secretly indicted both men last week. Both were still in county jail late Tuesday afternoon.
Overman told Fehr at his video arraignment that he has retained a Pittsburgh lawyer to represent him. His trial was set for Aug. 24 before Judge Maureen A. Cronin.
Fehr appointed Atty. Mark Lavelle to represent Mitchell. Mitchell's trial also was set for Aug. 24 before Judge Jack M. Durkin.
Both men are charged with aggravated murder, which carries a penalty of 20 years to life in prison upon conviction.
A total of 33 people were arraigned on various charges before Fehr.
