The Cats scored 53 points in the fourth, securing their win over the Mustangs.
FARRELL --On Sunday afternoon, Mahoning Valley ran the Macomb County Mustangs out of the gym with a 53-point fourth quarter to win going away, 160-103 in an International Basketball League game at Farrell High School.
The 53 points in the final quarter and the 160 total were both season highs for the Cats.
Bill Mallernee scored a season high 27 points as he connected on 11-16 from the field to pace nine Cats in double figures.
Rick McFadden added 21 points while Mark Metzka connected on six 3-pointers and 20 points. Lawrence Culver set a Cat record with 20 rebounds in the game for Mahoning Valley (10-5). Justin Hall and Travis Brown led the Mustangs (2-15) with 17 points each.
There were four lead changes early in the contest before the Cats took the lead for good at 10-9 on a 3-pointer by McFadden. Mahoning Valley led 35-22 after the first quarter.
Metzka hit three long range shots, and Mallernee scored eight in the second stanza as the Cats extended the lead to 73-47 at intermission. Justin Hall scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half for Macomb.
Wrapping up
The second half saw the Cats hit on 58 percent from the field to the Mustangs' 37 percent. Mahoning Valley outscored Macomb 97-56 after the break with Kevin Netter scoring 14 points in the second half, 12 of those in the fourth quarter.
For the game Mahoning Valley was 61 of 111 from the field (55 percent) while the Mustangs were only 39-106 (37 percent). The Cats also had 19 3-pointers to just eight for Macomb.
The Cats had 74 rebounds to just 49 for Macomb while they had 23 turnovers to 20 for the Mustangs. Mahoning Valley had 36 assists to just 12 for Macomb.
The Cats will travel next weekend to take on Dayton on Friday and Saturday nights. Their next home game, scheduled for June 21 against Akron, will be played at Girard High School at 7:30 p.m.
The last game, on June 24 against Detroit, will be at the Struthers Fieldhouse at 7:30 p.m.
