The school board members will work up a new list of interviewees.
WARREN -- Sixteen people applied for the Warren City Schools superintendent post after the board of education last month extended the recruitment period.
Among the local applicants is Dr. Patrick Guliano, former Niles City Schools superintendent.
Guliano, who grew up in Niles and attended Niles schools, came to that city's superintendent position after working in Warren schools 25 years. He had been the Warren district's athletic director.
In February 2004, after eight years at the helm of the Niles schools, Guliano stepped down without citing a reason. Being a tenured teacher, he then served as interim principal at Niles McKinley High School.
Renewed effort
The Warren Board of Education started over in May on its search for a new superintendent to replace Betty English, who plans to step down when her contract expires in July.
The board and Ohio School Boards Association reopened the national search process that began Feb. 9.
Linda Metzendorf, board president, said there were several people who did not initially apply for the top post. She said board members will meet in executive session today to review the latest applications and start working on a list of those people to get interviews.
The board in recent weeks conducted three interviews. It retained the file of Lloyd Martin, regional director, Duvall, Fla., who has a doctorate in education and 19 years in education including 15 as an administrator.
Other previous applicants who, with Martin, again applied are: John Wilson, an executive director in the Warren schools offices; Kevin Turner, Jefferson Area schools superintendent; Sam Lucas, Harrison Hills superintendent; Thomas Robey, Life Skills Center of Toledo regional manager; and William Kirby, Huntington County (Ind.) superintendent.
New prospects
Along with Guliano, those who did not apply the first time but want a chance now are:

UDr. Deborah Byrd, Barnesville Exempted Village coordinator.
UDr. Kathryn Hellweg, Northwest Local superintendent.
UDr. David Lyon, Carrollton Exempted Village assistant superintendent.
UMaria Pappas, a Youngstown City Schools principal.
UMichael Sawyers, Cleveland Heights-University Heights director.
UJerry Skiver, New Boston Local superintendent.
URichard Sykes, Three Rivers Local principal.
U Dr. Bruce Thomas, South Euclid-Lyndhurst coordinator.
There were initially 25 people interested in being superintendent. The job posting was sent to 2,500 addresses in Ohio and posted on the Internet and National School Boards Association site.
The OSBA is conducting the search at a cost of $5,900 plus expenses not to exceed $2,000.
