ABERDEEN, Md. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers held off a ninth inning rally by the Aberdeen Ironbirds and pulled out a 6-5 victory Friday night at Ripken Stadium.
It was the third straight victory for the Scrappers, who improved to 17-14 on the season and moved into first place in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League.
Mahoning Valley took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning against the Ironbirds.
Reliever Josh Kite gave up back-to back singles to Lorenzo Scott and Ryan Steinbach to open the inning, but after Steinbach's hit the Scrappers were careless getting the ball back into the infield and Cirilo Cumberbatch's throw ended up in the Scrappers' dugout as one run crossed the plate.
Roddy earns fourth save
Dustin Roddy came in to relieve Kite and got Nolan Reimold to fly out, while Keith Reid then singled to center scoring the second round before Roddy finally retired the final two batters.
Cumberbatch was the Scrappers offensive leader going three-for-four with a two-run home run and four RBI's on the night.
Cumberbatch put the Scrappers ahead 2-1 in the second with his first homer of the season and then had a two-run single in the fifth inning to up the score to 4-1.
Mahoning Valley added a run in the seventh without getting a hit as the Ironbirds committed one of their five errors in the contest and then added another run in the ninth on Cumberbatch's third hit, an RBI single.
Dixon is starter, winner
Kevin Dixon (2-0) started for the Scrappers and pitched five solid innings, allowing just a single run in the first inning, five hits and four strikeouts.
Jose Amaya and Kite pitched a combined two innings, but allowed six hits and four runs. Roddy, who got credit for his fourth save, allowed one hit and had one strikeout.
The Scrappers had plenty of other opportunities in the contest as they stranded 13 runners, twice leaving the bases loaded.
Reimold, the Kennedy Catholic High graduate in his first pro season, went 1-for-4.
The teams will meet in game two of the series tonight at 7 p.m.
