On this date in 1975, three American astronauts blast off aboard an Apollo spaceship hours after two Soviet cosmonauts are launched aboard a Soyuz spacecraft for a mission that includes a linkup of the two ships in orbit.
In 1606, Dutch painter Rembrandt is born in Leiden, Netherlands. In 1870, Georgia becomes the last Confederate state readmitted to the Union. In 1916, Boeing Co., originally known as Pacific Aero Products, is founded in Seattle. In 1948, President Truman is nominated for another term of office by the Democratic national convention in Philadelphia. In 1964, Sen. Barry M. Goldwater of Arizona is nominated for president by the Republican national convention in San Francisco. In 1965, U.S. scientists display close-up photographs of the planet Mars taken by Mariner 4. In 1971, in a surprise announcement, President Nixon says he will visit the People's Republic of China. In 1976, a 36-hour kidnap ordeal begins for 26 schoolchildren and their bus driver as they are abducted near Chowchilla, Calif., by three gunmen and imprisoned in an underground cell. July 15, 1980: Damage could run as high as $750,000 in a fire that destroyed two buildings in Grove City's downtown business district.
Testifying during a hearing sought by the Youngstown NAACP, Emanuel N. Catsoules, superintendent of Youngstown public schools, says several black administrators have been assigned to predominantly black schools since the U.S. District Court ordered the school staff integrated in 1978.

July 15, 1965: Betty Gallagher, 23, of Youngstown and her sister, Heather, 16, who had been visiting from Maryland, are killed when their Mustang is rammed by another car traveling at high speed through a red light at E. Dewey Ave and Rush Blvd. Youngstown has recorded eight traffic fatalities in two weeks, 15 since June 1 and 24 so far in 1965, compared to 14 for all of 1964.
Adlai Stevenson, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, collapses and dies in a London street. Stevenson had visited Youngstown three times, twice as a presidential candidate and once to attend the wedding of a friend.
Armed robbers bind and beat Mrs. Hilda Davis, 64, of 4114 Euclid Blvd., fleeing with more than $1,000. The robbers entered the home at midmorning while her husband, Morris Davis, operator of the New York Quality Rye Baking Co., was at work.

The Grotto Band gives the first of the summer concerts in Youngstown city parks, appearing at Lincoln Park. The Odd Fellows Band will appear at South Side Park and the Youngstown Military Band will play at Wick Park.
