July 15, 1965: Betty Gallagher, 23, of Youngstown and her sister, Heather, 16, who had been visiting from Maryland, are killed when their Mustang is rammed by another car traveling at high speed through a red light at E. Dewey Ave and Rush Blvd. Youngstown has recorded eight traffic fatalities in two weeks, 15 since June 1 and 24 so far in 1965, compared to 14 for all of 1964.
Adlai Stevenson, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, collapses and dies in a London street. Stevenson had visited Youngstown three times, twice as a presidential candidate and once to attend the wedding of a friend.
